Giselle

Giselle is het verhaal van een meisje en haar crew van zes hiphopdansers. Giselle wil beroemd worden als ze ouder is.

Het verhaal begon met een jong kind dat ontsnapte aan iets of iemand. Zijn naam was El, hij eet alleen salade en heeft geen vrienden. Hij wilde zich verstoppen en kwam terecht op de geheime plek van de crew waar hij Giselle ontmoet…

De crew was laat vandaag en wilde helemaal niet oefenen. Giselle wilde haar vrienden bewijzen dat ze zich niet aan het voorbereiden waren om beroemd te worden, dus vroeg ze haar crew om een naam te bedenken voor hen. Een lid van de crew wilde deze onzin overslaan en zei dat hun naam de bloempotpitjes moest worden, wat iedereen behalve hij haatte. De hele crew behalve Giselle ging wat snacks halen en toen ontmoetten Giselle en El elkaar en dansten ze op de maat van de muziek.

Het toneelstuk had zeer indrukwekkende bewegingen. De funky en intergalactische klanken pasten heel goed bij de dans en dankzij de vorm van het theater ging het echt mee met de sfeer van de dans. De danstechnieken waren erg uniek, snel en complex maar de dansers hadden ook controle over hun bewegingen. Giselle is geïnspireerd op een klassiek ballet, maar is bijna helemaal omgetoverd tot hiphop. Soms verandert de muziek van klassiek in hiphop.

On Sunday 17 November, I saw the performance of Giselle in the Royals Theatre. Giselle is a story of a girl and her crew of six which were hip hop dancers. Giselle wants to become famous when she grows up.

The story begun by a young child escaping from someone or something. His name was El, he only eats cabbages and has no friends. He wanted to hide and ended up in the secret area of the crew where he meets Giselle…

The crew was late today and didn’t want to practice at all. Giselle wanted to proof her friends that they weren’t preparing for being famous so she begun by asking what their crew’s name would be. A member of the crew wanted to skip this nonsense and said their name should be the flower pot seeds which everyone hated except him. The whole crew except Giselle went to get some snacks and then Giselle and El met each other and danced to the beat of music.

The play, which had very impressive movements, boasts a host of different moments where they go from one part of view to the other. The funky and intergalactic sounds fitted in with the dance very well and thanks to the shape of the theatre it really went with the flow of the atmosphere of dance. The dance techniques were very unique, fast and complex but the dancers were also in control of their moves. Giselle is inspired by a classical ballet. But is almost completely turned into hip hop. Sometimes the music turns from classic to hip hop.

This play has some English words but it might be better if you know Dutch too. Either way, the dance makes it worthwhile.
